“Mama?” I asked nervously as I approached her by the fire. I was in my room when she arrived home but the muffled sobs I had heard from the front of the house worried me. She sat in the rocking chair positioned between the hearth and large window overlooking the sea. I watched her hunched over, holding her head in her hands and I swore I heard a few sniffles. Raising her head at my entrance, she quickly wiped away tears and my heart lurched for the sadness shining in her eyes. “Mama, what’s the matter?”
